First time in my life buying a new car, so not sure about the process.

Once you know what model you want, do you call different dealers to get quotes for the car you want or do they all have the same price?

Is it expected/normal to negotiate or are the prices quite fixed? We are trading in.

Prices are usually very fixed across all dealers but maby you will get 500 euro off a new car.good news on trade in as they are worth more this year than any other.

Thanks, and is the stock shared between all the dealers in the country? If I want one specific colour, do I need to call to see who has it?

If it's a new car of a certain make you're after, for example VW, then you'll likely only be able to buy it from a vw dealer.

If you want a white petrol golf for example, then you will have to hunt around dealers to find out if there is one in stock somewhere, or else it may have to be ordered.

Have you settled on the spec level of the model you want? Most will have 3 or 4 different levels, it helps when trying to compare pricing to know the exact spec you want. I'd certainly compare 2 or 3 dealers of the same brand, visiting in person if possible with your trade in.

You couldn't have picked a worse time to be buying a brand new car to be honest. Short supply with ridiculously long lead times on certain models. In turn dealers are very mean with any sort of discount because they know they don't have to give one, unless it's something nobody wants and they are eager to get rid of it.

When buying new is it a good time to add roof bars and tow hitch fitted? Is there more scope for a discount on these rather than a price drop?

There's such a shortage of cars out there dealers aren't going to give any meaningful deals (they simply don't need to as lots of people have saved a small fortune with the various lockdowns and that money needs to be spent somehow), with one exception - if you have a decent trade-in. Since dealers can't get their hands on enough second-hand cars either, with the usual supplies of cars from the UK effectively not happening now that it is so expensive to import from over there thanks to Brexit, they are made for trade-ins especially if it's something desirable. Beggars can't be choosers.

Dealers might be mad for trade-ins but they are giving low ball trade-in prices now as they want to make as much money on each car they sell now because they are selling so little new ones due to the chip shortage.
