Putting a water softener in the attic

Looking for a bit of advice. Our mains water supply comes into our house via a conduit in the hall that seems to go up to the attic, and then to the mains-fed appliances/taps and the water tank.

We have hard water, and I want to install a softener. An external unit is out as it would be at the front door. The supply is accessible behind a panel in the hall, but there isn't room for a for a unit, and anything in the kitchen would have already missed the tank.

I think the attic is the only place with space and access. Has anyone tried this approach?
