Can you refuse an electronic search by immigration?

The announcement that the Gardai will be legally allowed to search mobile phones of anyone they suspect being involved in crime made me wonder about how this would impact security.

I know after 9/11, CBP officers in the US have the ability to inspect your tablet, phones, cameras, etc.. when entering America and you can be deported if you refuse.

Does the same thing apply here? Do airport officers have the authority to conduct such searches and if so, how often are they carried out?

The best job if u go to the states is not to bring any of that stuff with you. Anything you do bring wipe it clean before you go over , get laptop / phone over there as they're much cheaper and suck down the files you need over SSH

As far as I can see, this has nothing to do with immigration and the Guards will still need a warrant.

Phone manufacturers should allow for two passwords. Both unlock the phone, but one wipes all user data except phone and txt records. Those can be had from operators, except for the txt message contents.

I don't believe courts should ever be allowed to give the authorities powers to access and empty your bank accounts, steal your bitcoin and so forth, which these powers would effectively do in some instances.
