I have some faint memories of this from being a kid when his body was found hanging from a bridge in London. Literally a breakaway masonic lodge called P2 controlled all of Italy in the 70s as a Government within a government and they probably even murdered a pope! The Godfather III movie loosely based the movie plot on this. Mindblowing stuff to be sure. Even if only half this is true.

Yeah "In God's Name" the book by David Yallop from 1984 is a good read about this subject. Coppola definitely used the story as the main drama in Godfather part III. Stefano Ruli, the storywriter for the great original 2015 Italian crime film 'Suburra' incorporated small aspects of this story for that film, in that story the main crime boss 'Samurai' has close ties to The Vatican Bank, and what is never actually really said in that film is heavily implicated.

I remember the book being split into four parts; the first being a quick biography, the second a summary of the papal election, the Third on the Vatican bank and the fourth on the death of the pope. I found the last part the least interesting, even back when I was more into conspiracies. Something on the bank alone would be very interesting.
