VRT penalties for vintage - How are they calculated

    Afternoon All.

I am looking at car in mainland Europe that will turn 30 years old this September.

If I bring the car into the state now but not register, what penalties would I face when present for a VRT in September?

Would they be based somehow on the 8months it was in the country as a non-vintage?

Or could it be the full €3000 due to a lack of NOX figures?

If the penalties are less than 1K it may be worth it for this particular car.

    Thanks,

    Wavey.

    Thanks Bazz.

Was looking through that site but missed that.

Would you think the "total VRT due" value mentioned would be based on the non-vintage calculation - so the car's status prior to presenting for VRT?

Or the vintage calculation - so the date the car is presented?

I suspect the former but have to ask.

There are no late fees for vintage vehicles.

Well there are, but the maximum penalty is only €200 and its not enforced.

But the OP wants to import it now before it's actually 30 years old so doesn't that mean it's not a vintage car yet? I'd imagine Revenue will go off the date of entry into the state and VRT late penalties will apply from then.

VRT can only be accessed when the car is presented though - so if the VRT due at the appointment date in Sept is €200, then the penalty can only be tiny - i.e. even if you were a year late then its 365 x €200 x 0.001 = €73?

But when you present a car to be VRT'd don't you have to produce an invoice and/or ferry ticket with proof of the date of entry to the State? Otherwise everyone would have been bringing cars in and not presenting them until the VRT figure drops.

Nope you can actually keep a car here on UK plates for years and once it becomes 30 years old there are no late penalties

Yeah the penalty would certainly be counted from the date of entry into the state. I think its not uncommon for people to have UK reg cars in their garages for years until they are 30 years old

Seems like a silly loop hole.

Do you know of anybody that got away with that or if it is written somewhere?

    It seems too easy TBH.

    Thanks all for the replies.

When it comes to proof of the cars age - Is it based on the year of registration or year of manufacture?

    Year of first registration.

I'm looking at a car myself that's for sale, it has turned 30 but is in the country since July 2021and not currently vrt'd, price of the car is roughly 2500, I was hoping it was only costing 200 for vrt but looking at the vrt site it says that there are late penalties if not vrtd before 30 days.

At the moment I've a deposit payed, but I don't know what else I'm going to have to pay... anyone any ideas before I scrap the whole idea..

Car was registered in the North.

Open to correction, but I think the penalty (if any) should only be a small percentage of the VRT which is only €200.

If you can't prove the car was brought into NI before 01/01/2021, you will probably have to pay duty and VAT as well as VRT.

Here is a question, not that I have one , but Category D vehicles have no vrt, or road tax, ambulance, fire engines, dust carts, road sweepers,

A dust cart in UK is what we call a Bin Lorry, is that what they mean by dust cart in VRT terms?

    I mean it's hardly a

Was chatting to a VRT person today on the phone and she stated that it's 200 for the vrt (which i already knew) and the top penalty was 200 because it's in the country nearly 10 months, if it wasn't vintage then the penalty would be more, So it would seem that a vintage CAT A Vehicle is capped at 200 for the penalty...
