    Hi Everyone

Just starting up as self employed.

Question how to make sure I get paid under verbal agreement since upon completion of the job I have to wait 30 days end of month. Should I give something to sign saying that I have completed the job and price agreed? And what type of format should it be? Many Thanks

You can agree whatever terms you like for payment. Most businesses that deal with consumers will have pay on receipt terms. If you’re dealing with other businesses then, yes you may have to wait 30 days. But if you outgoings before you get paid then it is perfectly acceptable to ask for a deposit, say 30 or 50%.

The main thing is to agree verbally or in writing what your payment terms are. Then there is no excuse if they’re late.

You need to communicate regularly with your client that they’ve received your invoice, it’s been approved and due for payment.

    Thank you

I provided services is there anything I can offer to sign on each job completion before the invoice? So that I can have sort of proof of services?

of course there is ... just create your own 'job sheet' template. It can document anything you want on it.

So for instance you can have it contain

    • Quote number
    • PO number from client
    • Hourly / Daily rate
    • Fixed rate
    • What is to be delivered / services to be done
    • Summary of services delivered
    • Place for customer to sign when job is done.

Send a copy of this in to the company with the invoice for the job and it should cut down 'queries' that you might get from the accounts payable team,

Ultimately you are at the behest of the client as to when you get paid - you can have any amount of terms and conditions on the quote / invoice in relation to when you get paid but in reality if they are late paying you may have to suck it up / keep hounding them until you get paid as there is no real mechanism for small businesses in Ireland to enforce payment terms.

Getting a deposit / part payment on agreement of job would be ideal
