There are mosques in Ireland already you know... 🙄 and are Irish people really in a position to give out about a religion attempting to spread itself throughout the world when Irish people did so much to spread another religion throughout the world, whether it was wanted or not.

I've always been fascinated by Asian/Middle Eastern solutions for the want of a better word, stern sculling for example. Architecture and language are other ways in which a completely different way of solving a problem come out. A katana for example is a good solution of making a sword from poor quality steel.

Aye, Islams ban on iconography really gave a massive shove to caligraphy and different ways of looking at architecture with influences from Byzantine, Persian and pre Islamic styles, made very much their own. Though that ban wasn't always in place. It evolved. In the very early days of Islam human and animal subjects were in play. In Shia Iran it's still in play to some degree.

I'm not sure you can count the Haghia Sophia though since it was built as a church and spent nearly 1000 years as one.

Kinda found it a disappointment after seeing the Hagia Sophie first. The Hagia Sophia is much older, has a massive freestanding dome, and the acoustics are amazine. the blue Mosque looks spectacular from the outside, but on the inside its much more cramped with massive support columns holding up the roof. Roman/Byzantine engineering knowledge had been lost by the time the Blue Mosque was built.

Agree its well worth a visit. Just remember to book your slot months in advance and definately go on the night tour as well as day tour.

interesting side note,,, The Alhambra was handed over to the Spanish by negotiated surrender, with the last muslim ruler going into exile with his entourage and portable wealth. He looked back at the Alhambra and started crying, prompting his wife to say," Do not weep like woman for what you would not defend as a man!"

so much was lost after the fall of Rome, only to be regained during the renaissance. That said the Islamic rulers of Constantinople were excellent custodians and really added to the city too. The Sulieman Mosque, The Bazaar and palace are great. thankfully they were not as iconoclastic as other Muslim empires or the Protestant sects

good point, i had forgot about the bouts of Byzantine iconoclasm as their empire crumbled. Half the empire lost, (persia completely lost to Islam), they were looking for reasons, and came to the conclusion they lost because they had lost God's favour, so were desperately looking for a reason for God's disfavour.. I suppose just like all iconoclasts of different religious flavours.

As much as I despise all religions for the con jobs that they are, I'd love to incorporate the Islamic horseshoe style entrance into whatever building I'd have commissioned if for some bizarre reason had shedloads of cash to spare.
