    hi all

i applied for a new passport a few weeks ago. it hadnt expired but was damaged. it hasnt moved at all in terms of processing. an unexpected trip has come up and i need an id for it. do you think the passport office will return the original. my friend thinks they will but to be honest i think its really unlikely! they said it happened to them and they drove to the passport office in d2 who advised them to go to balbriggin and secutity there handed back their passport after 6pm, this friend wants me to go this trip... or perhaps just want me to pay for it lol. i dont think there story rings true....

    Ask them.

You can get an “emergency” passport, once you can prove you’re travelling.

the problem is i have already applied. they seem to think the passport office will return my old one if i drive up and ask for it but this seems really unlikely to me

The printers is in Balbriggan. It is possible that in a very specific circumstance of it being requested and made ready for you it could, maybe, happen.

However, if you haven't been told to do it, it won't be there and you won't get anything.

If you call in with your booking info, flights etc, they should give you an emergency passport so you can travel.

Your “regular” passport should be processed as usual.

Best to make an appointment with them before just rocking up.

Emergency passports are reserved for actual emergencies.

I'm not saying the OP's situation isn't an actual emergency, but it doesn't sound like one.

What a weird thread title. No idea what it has to do with the question posed

    I have no idea either.

The OP needs his old passport from the passport office.

The OPs friend told him he could go to the passport office and collect his old passport.

Does the OP think his friend is scamming him??

I remember travelling to the US, with my then boss, from Shannon airport. His passport had gone through the washing machine the week before, and was fairly ragged. He had no issues with anyone he showed it to until he got to the US Immigration pre-clearance. The agent took his passport and dangled it disdainfully with her thumb and index finger and said “Sir, don’t ever hand a passport like this up to me again. I should trash it as biohazard”. Boss was freaked out for the rest of the trip that it wouldn’t be recognised as valid and he’d be stranded.

Nothing to do with your situation really. But then, neither is the thread title, so I guess anything goes.

Is the thread titled by a native speaker of English, or is it a typo?

    🤔🤨

  • Yes they do.

they think they’re trying to prank them I guess would be a better way to word it. Or perhaps you could say they were scamming them out of money spent on fuel and food, though for that to be the case the friend would need to be making money (ie own the petrol station they use)

i suppose the prank if that’s the case is they’re being fooled into thinking they can go to a passport office and ask for their old one back. That seems highly unlikely anyway.

OP, if this trip is something you have to do, you can get an emergency passport as has been said. However you’d need to be travelling for a funeral, someone’s sick, work or whatever it can’t just be you got a surprise trip to Spain with the boys for your bday like.

Either way, fortunately for you, not only do you not have to worry if you’re friends telling you the truth— or whether random internet people on after hours are telling you the truth (your friends more likely to be /s), the passport office has a phone so you can ring and ask!

Wouldn't have anything to do with US customs and immigration personnel being colossal assholes would it?

You're not supposed to travel on a severely damaged passport - which it was - so she was actually being quite lenient in letting him off with a warning. You do get good people in tough jobs from time to time. I've always found the US Immigration folk in Shannon to be pleasant to deal with. Firm but fair.
