Central Heating Issue

    My heating system is broken into 4 different zones;

1 living spaces (Kitchen, sitting room etc.)

    2 Bedrooms

    3 Hotwater

    4 converted attic space.

Everything used to work fine until maybe a year ago when we noticed that the bedroom heating will not come on if another zone is on also.

It seems to work when turned on on its own. I first thought it might have been the thermostat but the oil burner kicks in and I can see that the zone valve has opened also. I am at a loss as to the reason.

    Any ideas??

Does the converted attic space come on if another zone is on?

What type of heating have you? oil/gas, if a sealed system what is the boiler pressure when cold and hot and if the pump is externally located can you post the make/model/setting?.

    We have oil heating.

The pump is external & the zone valves are located in the hotpress.

all that I know from the plumber that did it fist day is that the hotwater system is pressurised from the mains so as to have the required pressure for the upstiars power shower.

Ok the first port of call for you is to check each zone valve is working and which zone or zones open when you tell the heating controller to heat a zone.

If you and another person could turn on and off each zone one at a time while the 2nd person is at the zone valves no.1 confirming they are powered on correctly when you turn on the zone and no2. they are actually opening correctly when you open the zone.

You could be looking at a wiring fault or a mechanical fault , it would be good to pinpoint the issue before proceeding , if its a wiring fault you might be better served getting an electrician who is good with heating controls.

The HW system is separate from your oil fired boiler system. Do you have a small water tank in your attic?, the cold water storage tank may still be there so you may have two tanks. Have you got your pump details?.

I have a big storage tank which I know just feeds the toilets and the electric shower.

All other heating is off the oil fired boiler and a cylinder.

I dont have my pump details to hand. Its a Firebird of some description. Sorry!!
