Anyone use Amazon.com (US)?

I got three very generous gift vouchers from work. Unfortunately they are for the Amazon.com site rather than .co.uk. They can't be transferred...

What kind of experience do people have with Amazon.com? Do the charges tend to be accurate i.e. customs charges at checkout if buying direct from Amazon?

I don't mind paying any extras for delivery/customs etc. so long as my package won't be held ransom by a delivery company or irish customs

Amazon collect the taxes at the checkout, so you won't have to deal with the an post vat/import duty

Perfect thanks! I just checked a basket on some items and the price of shipping and import duty racks up quickly but it's there to see at least. I've seen in other threads some issues with An Post returning packages for no good reason whatsoever and just wanted to confirm any other caveats or sneaky hidden charges.

  • That’s mainly from the UK, fortunately.

And not from Amazon they don’t have the same customs process as smaller retailers, it would all be done largely electronically which is what Irish customs requires now but smaller retailers were originally not quite sure how!

I bought a few things from Amazon US last year. The amount shown at checkout includes all import charges. All my orders last year were dispatched with UPS Express Saver (next day service). The only issue I had was one order got stuck in customs for a week.

Just spent all the voucher's today in one go so I can forget about it. I'm surprised how quick the shipping is: 12th Jan for two of the items and 2nd Feb for a third. The shipping and duty comes to an eye-watering $50 however so definitely won't consider using again.

It's airmail, so shouldn't take long (hence the premium cost). I use it now and then for specific items not available in Europe.

Never an issue with customs as Amazon know what information to put on packages unlike many UK companies.
