The health system

As someone currently going through the health system for a broken bone, not my fault someone closed a door on my finger!

What is the story with it here? I have no medical card or insurance and feel a bit in limbo. First question I am asked at all times is medical card or insurance.

If you have neither you need to pay.

Its not that expensive, if you went straight to A&E it’s 100euro (plus 80 a day (capped at 800 in a calendar year) if you were kept in for some reason), and outpatients clinics after that are free.

If a GP referred you to A&E then that charge is waived.

Whatever you do pay, you can then claim back on your taxes as non reimbursed medical expenses.

There are four fees for healthcare in Ireland:

    (1) GP fees if you don't have a GP Visit or GMS card

    (2) pharma up to the DPS limit

    (3) ED 100 euro fee

    (4) overnight fee in hosp = 80 pn

Only if you go private. If you are referred through the public system, you won’t be charged (though the wait times will be a lot longer, obviously).

All the info you need is here https://www.hse.ie/eng/about/who/acute-hospitals-division/patient-care/hospital-charges/

    Approriate paragraph:

If you are referred by your GP to out-patients for specialist assessment by a Consultant or his or her team for diagnostic assessments such as x-rays, laboratory tests or physiotherapy, there is no charge if you attend as a public patient.

    Hi,

So this is the bit, my GP referral after the breaks in the fingers, but again first question is will you go public or private.

Issue is fingers broke badly, healing badly. I don't want two crooked fingers. But the lot confuses me and I'm 36!

Going public seems like long waits, going private I need insurance, or I can pay out of pocket.

Just seems a mad system as either way the consultant who seems me works out of a public hospital in the midlands so not sure why either private or public should be different.

I must say, the two tier system is a load of rubbish. Makes me wonder where my 1899 per month on tax, USC etc goes!!

If you've no health insurance then some consultants won't even see you privately.

You need to find out the likely waiting time for a public referral and then ask about alternatives.

OP ,you're in After Hours , pull the door off its hinges and bate it over the head of the bloke who broke your fingers.

It was a 70+ year old woman unfortunately who slammed a door hit both small fingers.

The beating over head option did appeal to me...

    I've broken my hand twice.

First time about 15 yrs ago my boss was doing too. much talking and my temper being what it is I punched a wall, the wall was concrete, my fist isn't

That cost a tonne and the humiliation of my boss giggling when he seen it.

Second time was last year. The most innocuous of circumstances, walking through a door I clipped hand off the side of the door reveal (that's the raised plaster around an exterior door)

That cost 100 euro maybe 150..cant remember.

    Edit

I've just read your most recent post, therefore, I can see you need more of a specialist referral..

Frankly a specialist should see you privately for about 3 to 400 euro. I seen an ENT surgeon for 300
