Teagasc and NUI Galway have been awarded €600,000 in funding on how best to flood 300,000ha of grassland in private farmers ownership.

Nice if you can get it.

Smacks of the previous takeover when Bord na Mona was being set up and taking over farmers land. Or around here of Coillte taking over farmers land.

What's the best way to get around this?

Sow oats and barley to change land use to tillage? 🤔

They seem to have a horn for grassland and not tillage.

Third sentence in it says the target is 80,000ha so the headline is sensationalist.

40,000ha in the next 5 years is the target which is probably marginal land as it is. There'll most likely be decent incentives to go with it and the majority will willingly go along with it.

Sounds like the west/midlands will be the main beneficiaries as that's where the predominant peat lands are. Alot of this land is moving into the hands of descendents of farmers children who see it as a hobby away from a main job. They'll bite the governments hand off for a scheme that pays them to let the ducks have it.
