Set top box advice

I have an Edison box that gets Saorview and Freesat, but it's going back to the shop as it has some incompatibility with the Samsung TV (signal keeps dropping out randomly for a second).

    Where's a good therad/place to find a replacement? Any tips on a good make/model?

Probably your dish or aerial rather than the box.

The terrestrial signal here (North County Down) from Clermont Carn drops out occasionally for a few seconds. It seems to be weather related - heavy rain or dense fog in the line of signal path. But, we anyway are in the extreme fringe region for this transmitter.

Do you find the signal drops for a second or two and then comes back to being perfect?

I have noticed this from Clermont Carn. I have a very strong signal so it being weather related doesn't makes sense. There's another thread someone says the same thing is happening to Truskmore.

If it was weather related you'd expect to see the signal glitch / picture and sound breakup randomly at times, but I don't get that. It either works perfectly, or the TV reports that there is no signal at all for a few seconds and then it comes back perfectly.

Yes, doughnut2000 - it is exactly the same effect here. Signal totally gone for a few seconds then back up to perfect.

Wonder what on earth it could be caused by?

Borderline usable signal at your receiver, that's all. There were potentially troublesome weather conditions around the weekend, even for people with otherwise good reception, but that's over now.

    Thank you.

That's not what it is. If it was weather related, there would be evidence of the received signal strength varying. I've watched the signal strength meter during these periods and there is no such evidence. Instead, it appears that the carrier signal is disappearing completely, and then coming back at normal strength a few seconds later.

I have far from a borderline signal, I have a very strong signal with excellent SNR. There is considerable margin for weather conditions. It may be weather related, but it appears the problem is at the transmitter, not the receiver. The fact that it is affecting Truskmore too might indicate it is an issue with that and Clermont operating as an SFN.

It obviously isn't related to temperature inversions bringing in distant interferers, when those conditions aren't present. Otherwise weather should have very little effect.

Anyhow, I'd say it's nothing to do with transmitters. Nothing much to do with the thread title here either, so we'd be better off starting another one I suppose.

Sounds like you might be suffering from what I had - an issue with the HDMI handshake between the box and the TV.

Screen would go black for a second and sound would drop, then come back perfect. Could happen five times in a minute, or once an hour.
