Capture HDMI output from cable box

Is this possible? I heard the HDMI Capturing Devices that you can buy on Amazon or eBay are actually 'fake' as the HDMI stream is protected. I don't know too much about this but would be interested as I have UPC but can't get the recordings out of the box.

It's very possible that the STB will refuse to output a HD signal if the capture device doesn't support HDCP.
