    Hi all,

Looking for suggestions for an alternative to Vodafone FTTH Gigabit modem.

Really my only concern is that is needs to have a turn off able 5G setting or not one at all.

If anyone could suggest a suitable replacement I would be grateful..

    TIA

    K

Pretty much any modern router would be dual band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz so you won't get something without it unless very low end. Does the Gigabox not let you disable it?

Why do you want to disable it? The 2.4 GHz network wouldn't be particularly fast nowadays, especially with interference from neighbouring devices.

So 5Ghz is Wifi on the 5Ghz spectrum. It was first used in 802.11a in 1999 and has been been common in most Wifi routers except the really cheap ones since then. Almost all in the last 10 years use Wifi in 2.4GHz which is more susceptible to interference from microwaves, bluetooth etc and 5GHz which is not. 5GHz is way better than 2.4GHz but the issue is that the range of the 5GHz is low.

The max Wifi speeds that you are going to get on 2.4GHz are going to be low or approx 150Mbit so 15% of what you are paying for.

Now with 5GHz you can get well over 1000Mbit pending on the wifi chip in your phone/ laptop etc.

    -------

Now 5G is totally a different thing. I won't go into it pros cons etc. But it refers to 5th generation on mobile phone technology which is something new and has nothing to do with Wifi 5GHz

    ----

TLDR: 5GHz wifi been around since 1999, 5G is new technology class.

Source: Spent many years testing Wifi/bluetooth as my job but please feel free to google the difference

Confusion most likely created by ISP(or even manufacturer) firmware calling it "5G" by default, for short. Lazy pricks.

You should be able to turn off 2.4 or 5 independantly or WiFi altoghether.

If you see no option to control 2.4 and 5 separately look for "Split SSID" https://www.vodafone.co.uk/cs/groups/public/documents/contentdocuments/vfcon090504.pdf, providing VF didnt removed this option in firmware update

    Its present on

    Firmware Version:XS_3.7.04.11

    Product name:Vodafone Gigabox
