Looking to treat woodworm in a 1916 house, took up a board to check the joists and saw the following. Room is on the first floor.

It doesn't look fibrous but does looked pumped in. I know it's pre 1981.

No idea. Would those houses have had a lath and plaster ceiling?

    Yes, Lath and Plaster.

The plaster is forced in past the laths so that it "mushrooms" over the back of the lath and remains solidly stuck.

    Carry on.

Most asbestos I've worked with (very rarely and a very long time ago) looks more like hairy recycled cardboard paper. It crumbles like cardboard thats got soaked then dried. Also anytime I've worked with it, it was in sheets.

If you're not sure you should get it checked.

That's a lath & plaster ceiling. Be careful with it if you're keeping it - they are fairly fragile.
