Pump only running for a few seconds at a time

Recently move house and am relying on an open fire with a back boiler heating the rads.

However, at the moment the pump is only running for a few seconds at a time before cutting out and the rads aren't heating up.

I'd be really grateful if someone could tell me what the problem might be.

I presume that the pump is on a thermostat. If the fire is not big enough and hot enough, as soon as the pump switches on, cold water comes into the back boiler, cools it down and the pump switches off. If the fire is not hot enough, it will be a long time before the pump switches on again. You could try turning the thermostat to a lower number and it might stay on longer. Unless there is a large hot fire, if all the rads are on, they won't get very hot.

    That might just be it.

    Thanks for the reply.

I turned down the stat from 60 to 40 and got a better fire going and that has improved things.
