CH Pressure problem

I have a peculiar problem that has started recently and it has me baffled.

On going to bed and all heating off, the CH pressure is reading 1 bar or thereabouts. In the morning it is zero and boiler fails to start. Put a little water in and pressure is up to ,25 bar. Boiler fails to start but after trying it, eventually it starts and runs OK all day. During the day, pressure can go up to 3 bar, but normally it is between 1 and two bar.

The other peculiar thing is that after water heating, the hot water is at an elevated pressure and when a hw tap is turned on there is a short gush of water from it - but it always did this. Apart from the kitchen cw tap, all water in the house is pumped. System is installed about 8 or 9 years without problems.

    No apparent leaks anywhere.

    Any ideas.

Most likely a new expansion vessel needed, or it might be too small for volume of water.

I was beginning to think that, but I think the expansion vessel is part of the boiler so I will have to get put a new one in somewhere.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Well you need to be sure that that is the problem before changing and hoping for the best. There are other thing that can cause such problems.

I checked with the boiler manufacturer and they confirmed that there is an expansion vessel in the boiler but the boiler might need to be taken off the wall if space tight. The fluctuating pressure is consistent with a failing pressure vessel. A previous plumber said that the pressure vessel might be failing and suggested an external ne would be a heaper solution owing to the cost of the spare part.

I cannot touch the boiler as I am not qualified, so I need a qualified plumber.

If you don't have leaks in the existing one, then you could just fit one on the pipework and leave the existing one in situ until you can get a registered gas tech to remove it.

That is the plan. I looked at getting Bord Gais to service the boiler but first date is 18th Jan 2022. I need to do something before that.
