Boiler Install, Electrician Required?

Getting a new oil boiler installed along with new cylinder and heating controls.

I'd assumed as part of the install all the required electrics would be included, there is power to shed where boiler is going already.

Chatting to plumber there and he mentions clock wiring and had I someone to do it.

Am I the idiot here for assuming the plumber would install and fully setup/commission the system including clock, zone valves etc including the wiring. And that I wouldn't need to get my own electrician. To me it seems standard part of the job but maybe I'm wrong.

Some plumbers have their own electrician and some don’t. Have a look at your quote and see what’s included.

Electrical work for a zoned system isn’t always straightforward. The fact that there’s power there already doesn’t mean it meets required standards.

The quote was just a text message so not much details in it, no mention of electric side of things being included or not.

I, seemingly naively, assumed installation of piece of equipment would include the controls for said bit of equipment.

The zoning shouldn't be too complicated. Single zone and hot water valves in hotpress along with clock.

    Live and learn I suppose.

2 zones with thermostats, switched fused spur, rcd protection, time clock, isolator for valves outside hot press, supplementary bonding and associated wiring . No switches or clocks are permitted in hot press. Not as straightforward as you may think

To be honest the details and extent of it are kind of moot anyway, more just a question of whether electrical side of things was included as standard or not.

Probably fault on both our sides for assuming. I suppose just wanted to confirm here that having to get my own electrician isn't completely of the wall as I thought when initially heard, cheers.

Hopefully can get electrician at short notice now.

It was very slack of your installer not to mention that on top of his price, there would be charges for electrician also. Very unprofessional.

The job is a bit of a strange one to be fair as I am doing a lot of the work myself. I've run new internal pipes to rads and hot & cold feed back to hotpress and the plumber is just putting in boiler and cylinder & pump and connecting up to the new pipework, so reckon he assumed I knew electrician would be required.

I do think it is bad he wasn't clearer and his communication isn't great in general but at this stage I just need to try and get job done asap so don't really think looking for new plumber is on the cards.

Price was 5500 ex vat for boiler, cylinder, immersion, pump for water, 3 zone pack.

jesus at that price i would expect him to have an electrician on site as well

and a priest to bless the whole job

Really? At the time I had got few quotes for the whole job which included new rads, running new pipes for heating and water and fitting ensuite and that, and they had come in close to 20k

So had decided we could do the fitting new rads and pipes + ensuite side of things ourselves as that was labour intensive part of it and relatively easy in terms of how technical. So the 5500 quote seemed good, I had tried to get few other quotes but awful lot of no shows and lack of communication. The plumber was recommended by a few people so had assumed quote would reasonable.

How much should I be thinking for the job, oil boiler (4 bed 130sqm semi built in 70s so c3 ish BER, so decent enough oil boiler needed) in new location, we're moving the oil tank and running new pipe from it to hot press where heating manifold and cylinder are, new cylinder (single coil big enough one), pump for water pressure, immersion and 3 zone controls pack with the piping involved there.

I'd imagine this pushed up the quotes. Not saying OP isn't capable of running pipes but not many tradesmen just don't want to take ownership of someone else's work

Do you know if the requirement for no switches in hotpress is retroactive. ie, if we come across it (as we almost always do) do we have to write it up as needing attention?

Possibly yeah, that said I'm happy to accept any issues from heating manifold on or after connection to hot/cold feed are my issues.

I really need sorted this side of christmas so not sure I can try look for anyone else at this stage, unless someone wants to pm me recommendation in north county dublin.

It’s not retrospective however if a rec comes across this he is obligated to issue a notice of potential hazard or rectify.obviously if any new work is undertaken then it has to meet current standards.
