Which wireless router to use with Virgin Media in modem mode?

Having loads of WiFi drops throughout the day which is very annoying with my VM service. It’s been suggested that getting a better wireless router and switching the VM router to modem mode.

I’ve also read that some wireless modems aren’t compatible so wondering if anyone could recommend a reasonably priced one that they managed to set up with the VM hub.

If issue is just WiFi and not the VM connection, other option would be to get proper WiFi AP(access point), like Ubi, Aruba, etc.

Just had a look at those - are they just WiFi extenders cos it’s not where the WiFi reaches more that it’s dropping the whole time. It seems to be a common problem and replacing the router seems to be the proposed solution.

Im not that fluent in this sort of stuff though so welcome any guidance!

Just to be clear, you not using "WiFi" as substitute for "internet connection" ?

Is the problem with your WiFi or actual internet connection, does hardwired devices(Ethernet, if any in use)drop internet same time?

I was having terrible issues with VM hub 3. They replaced it but it was becoming intolerable for work. Bought a TP link Archer wireless router and all issues have disappeared. Best purchase, VM router is cack.

It’s grand when wired into the TV, has improved everything no end. So definitely the WiFi is the issue.

also, do I need to contact VM to use this or can I turn to modem mode myself - don’t fancy spending 2 hours on hold to sort this - obviously will if I have to but would like to avoid.

In this instance my first post still stand - dedicated WiFi AP(you can disable VM WiFi then).

Course, exhaust VM support option - might end up just rebooting router or replacement with no actual resolution, but at least you have it on record, of your list and it cost you nothing.

Replacing router with your own is potential option, but keep in mind - VM will not provide support beyond their hardware.

If you look into it closer - does it effect all WiFi clients same time? Could it be related to 5GHz steering? Split bands is avail, opt for 2.4 and test.

Have you the router split into 2.4ghz & 5ghz? ie., short distance and longer distance modes? Tweet Virgin Media and they will help you resolve any such issues, they did that for me when I had similar problems.

Yes, that's the one. It was easy to do and I didn't need to contact VM

I had the same issue. Stuck the VM hub in bridge mode and got WiFi mesh from TPLink.

I used to use my own router with the VM Hub did the whole 5Ghz/2.4FGhz thing. but the Mesh is vastly better for me anyway.
