Sealing slate

We got a new fireplace put in in the last few days and got a natural unpolished slate hearth put in.

We were recommended to seal it with varnish by one of the workmen. I'm just looking for a second opinion to see if this would work or not and if so would genral wood varnish be suitable?

Yes, a wood varnish will work fine. I used an acrylic varnish on old roof slates I used under a stove and to line the fireplace cavity behind it.

You could also leave it usealed, as if hot burny things fall on it they will burn the sealer.
