Installing Android Auto

    Hi,

I have an old car that does not have an auxiliary input. I contacted one or two companies in Dublin who recommended installing an android auto 10 screen.

Would this need a separate sim card to connect to the internet, in particular Spotify?

    Thanks

Android Auto basically takes what's on your phone and displays it on the screen installed in the car. It's a bit more complicated than that, because apps need to be written to use it, but the point of it is that the car screen is only for displaying and interacting with the apps, and everything else happens on the phone. So if you're using Spotify via AA, it's your phone's internet connection it will used, because Spotify is actually running on your phone, not on the head unit. It doesn't need a separate internet connection.

If you had an Android head unit with the Spotify app installed directly on it, then it would need an internet connection: either its own sim, or to be connected to a hotspot on your phone.

So you just need to be aware that an Android 10 head unit is different to Android Auto - although most such head units will support Android Auto. You can get head units (or OEM infotainment systems) that don't run on Android but still support Android Auto. All this pretty much applies to Apple's CarPlay too.

I installed android unit in my a6 and love it. Looked for ages and couldn't find one then I got ads on Instagram for a guy that does them. About 500 euro but worth it. I have a sim in it so no messing with connecting phone. I've free sim from work though I probably wouldn't be happy paying for sim but I suppose you can get them for cheap monthly now.
