New build query

Buying a new build - v small phase of just a row of houses. Massively delayed due to construction lock down. Due to be completed in April 2021, still weeks away from being in. Our house is in the middle of the row. Site manager suggested they can't hand over keys until all houses completed, but one house is weeks behind the rest. Can they legally withhold the keys from us if our house is ready to go? We're cash buyers if it makes any difference.

I take it you’ve only signed the contract and paid the deposit? If so the builder still owns the house so there’s nothing you can do. Check your contract as it should specify how long the builder has to complete the build. Usually the timeline is pretty long to cover them for delays.

We have friends who bought a new build which was delayed by 18 months (pre covid!!!) and the contracts allowed the builder 36 months to finish.
