    Hey guys

Just wondering has anyone done the whole family trip to Lapland,

Its something we want to do but not sure where is the best place to book & also what age would your youngest have to be to truly get the best from it ,

Obviously not for this year but going forward ,

Did look at doing it but COVID killed it

Definitely wouldn't pay the package prices & were considering building a trip ourselves

Check out flights to Helsinki and train from there to Rovaniemi OR direct flight to Rovaniemi

Plenty of hotel and other accommodation available if booking in advance. Had our eye on the Scandic in the city

Pretty sure there was a thread on trips here at one point

Went in December 2019 for four nights. 2A & 3 kids (10,8,5). Flights to helsinki via amsterdam and then overnight train to Rovaniemi. 1 night on the train each way and 2 nights in a cabin about 20 minutes outside Rovaniemi. Hired a car and picked it up at the train station and dropped it back there. Dog sledding trip, two visits to santa village and loads of time playing in the deep deep snow. Sauna in the cabin was a highlight, the cabin was beautiful. Santa village magical. Kids loved it, we loved it. Only downside was that it was too short. Should have stayed for a week! Train was a great adventure and the kids loved it, but maybe skip it on the way back if there is a flight available. Book the train over the phone, really helpful operators and they will apply free kids places etc which I found impossible to do on the website! Food is about the same price as Ireland, restaurant and supermarket. Excursions are very expensive (€600 for the family for a half day dog sledding). Santa Village doesn't have to cost a bean and is great fun once you get on board with a certain level of touristy kitsch. We went straight there from the train and were there before the tour buses so had a great walk around in peace and quiet. Really got busy as the day went on, but plenty of capacity to swallow all the people. Lovely hot chocolate in the upstairs cafe.

Arctic museum well worth a visit too.

Easy DIY trip and saves a fortune over the package tours and you get to see the places when they are quiet at your own pace.

We loved it and are going back to Lapland after christmas this year - further north to Levi, but will take a day trip back to santa village as its about 1.5 hours by road away.

You won't regret it. One of our most memorable family holidays, despite it being only four nights.
