In addition to map & compass is there any other apps or tools that people may recommend?

Well worth looking at either of the following resources;

There are some issues with the BMC site today but there good navigational videos lurking on the skills page. This is an example on youtube.

I use a Garmin Etrex10 as a backup for years.
