I am about to book a package holiday and am wondering about travel insurance. Any of the policies I have looked at will give you cover if you are diagnosed positive and have to cancel. Are there any companies that are offering cover if, for example, your holiday is cancelled by the tour company due to travel restrictions being put in place in the country you are visiting?

have a look at multitrip.com - it's the nearest I can find for good coverage.

Thanks for that, It seems as if nobody is doing any cover if your hol is cancelled due to govt restrictions or lockdown and the travel company are suitably vague about what happens to your payments if the holiday cannot go ahead!

you should check the terms and conditions with the travel agent for what you're booking

For instance, look at TUI holidays and they already offer what youre looking for without need for travel agents. They will refund if........

If the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) advises against non-essential travel abroad."

    • If the borders for the country you’re travelling to are closed to Irish arrivals.

    • If you have a booking to any destination that requires you to quarantine in a hotel on your return.

Thanks munchkin , that looks very good and I would be happy to go with that, unfortunately the Travel Department have no such guarantees which is surprising. They say on their website ''Once you have paid your balance, if the situation changes regarding travel restrictions, we will be in touch with you to discuss your options.'' which is pretty meaningless and vague.

I found what Chill.ie offered looked to cover most eventualities needed, covers curtailment if you get Covid within 14 days of departure.

A lot of insurers either are not offering any travel insurance at the moment, are not covering anything Covid related or have wording about 'may' pay in the event of Covid related claims.
