Surprising Glow Power E-Mail Received

I just received an email from Glow Power basically telling me I should move to Boird Gáis before their prices go up yet again on the 28th of October. Just wondering if anyone else has received a similar email and what they intend to do as I'm not sure myself. Here's the email in full:

"Some very good news for our loyal customers.

Given that prices seem to be going up and up, we’ve teamed up with Bord Gais Energy (BGE) to entice you to an offer we think is hard to beat. 

 

Firstly, thank you for being a loyal customer of Glowpower. We set about to introduce competitive pricing in the Irish energy market, but with wholesale electricity rates becoming unsustainably high, we have had to raise prices several times this year and we believe more price rises are on the way.

 

To protect our loyal customer base, and in the interest of genuine customer care, we are recommending that you switch supplier and move to Bord Gáis Energy (BGE) now to avoid our next price increase due on the 28th October. This gives you an opportunity to switch to a very competitive plan with a trusted Irish energy provider before our next price rise which is set for 28th of October.

Small power firms are going bust in the UK at a rapid rate; so this is probably them trying to get out of the market cleanly. Small operators don't have the capital to see if the current wholesale price rises are temporary or not so will need to put prices up hugely to survive.

They probably have not hedged their bets and bought forward contracts.

So they are paying spot prices and possibly cannot pass all the costs on, so best to offload customers.

Up until early this year wholesale gas was trading at about 2c - 2.4c per kWh.

It's currently at about 5c and some days it can be higher. (Day ahead pricing)

Add in passthrough charges, admin charges and you are at 8-9c per kWh and much higher some days.

Got the same email giving 4 days to switch on a bank holiday when you can't get in touch via phone to ensure it's not a scam so a bit weary of hitting that link until I can verify it. The customer portal is acting up a bit as well as it won't let me send messages to support.

Is the Bord Gais Energy deal actually a good one? If the Bonkers/Switcher calculators are up-to-date with the latest tariffs, in my case it may be worth moving to another supplier even though I take a 50 EUR hit.

Looks like Electric Ireland raises it tariffs today.

It is definitely a competitive deal (without seeing your usage, but unless it's really unusual) Bord Gais also guaranteed no price hikes until the spring, so that should be good till after paddys day.

I think the switching sites are accurate, they tell you whether price increase are factored in.
