What should I do before calling the boiler technician?

HELP! No heat in my house and it's just the time of year I'm starting to need it.

The boiler seems to turn on; it makes a humming sound and everything. The control panel on the wall says the heating is on too. But the hot taps don't give hot water and the radiators don't do nothing.

It's an Ideal Combi C310e boiler, and the control panel is a Sauter T27HW

There are six pipes coming out of the boiler, with stop-valves on four of them. Some are marked: Gas, Hot Out, etc., but some are not. There's a loops between two pipes and a valve on the loop. Do I need to do something with these valves?

The boiler service are known rip-off artists, and I don't want to call them about something simple. Besides which it's Saturday night getting into Sunday.

    Thanks!

There are other service people out there, if you don't have confidence in your last one's.

    Try the RGII site.

Please follow site and charter rules. "Resistance is futile"

Maybe I just need to bleed my radiators 🤔

You should have zone-valves somewhere - maybe these are the stop-valves which you mentioned?

They should have LED indicators on them to indicate whether they are open or closed. If the room thermostat is turned up, do one or more of the valves audibly open and does the LED light-up? Also, when was the last time the system provided hot water?

Is the boiler definitely firing? Can you feel heat in any of the pipes out of the boiler? Does the circulation pump run?

    It's deinitely firing.

How can I tell if the circulation pump is running?

And the output pipes aren't getting hot? You should be able to feel it vibrating when you put your hand on it. No reason to bleed rads really unless someone had been doing maintenance that led to system being drained

No, the output pipes aren't getting hot.

The digital display on the boiler says '00', which according to the manual means 'no demand for heat', but that's weird because the panel and the knobs on the radiators are on so there should be demand - maybe the panel isn't communicating with the boiler?

Most boilers have a reset button.

Failing that get another RGII , there's plenty of honest ones, ask your friends and neighbors for recommendation.

You may need to pressurise the system. (I need to do it every year.) Is there a pressure gauge near the boiler, or near your hot water cylinder? Check the pressure, (my one needs to be at about 1 bar to work.) If it is reading 0 follow the pipes from the gauge there should be a valve that you can use to raise the pressure. Dont forget to close the valve when you get to 1 bar...

Check if your zone thermostats are working, batteries may need changing. If there’s no demand on the system that might be the problem. Happened to me before.
