Proof of no claims bonus after cancelling motor insurance policy

My OH changed from a van to a car recently. We sent back the insurance cert and disc to the van insurance broker and they confirmed the policy was now cancelled. That was a week ago. The broker repeatedly said they would send the proof of no claims to my OH 'shortly'. Today, they told him it can take 7-10 working days (to me, that's not 'shortly'). His new private policy on the car is waiting for the proof of NCB before they send the new cert and disc. The new broker agreed to a week's extension on cover because he didn't have it yet to send them but they presumably won't wait much longer than that.

Has anyone any experience of this? 7-10 days seems very long. I don't trust the broker because they give a slightly different version each time my OH contacts them. How do other people manage when going from commercial to private? It is an awkward process it seems.

It's because you cancelled the policy not because you're switching from commercial to private. You're asking the company to do an ad hoc unplanned task so of course it will take longer.

With a normal renewal you receive the proof of no claims before you're due to renew. As you cancelled the policy you will not be due any additional no claims to what was at your last renewal, as it is less than one year so why don't you just send in that? It should have the ncb pin on it anyways.

Thanks for the reply. We can't sent last year's NCB unfortunately - the new broker said the date on it has to be the date of cancellation because you can't use the same NCB on two policies simultaneously.

I had same issue. After dozens of phone calls I had to call to a branch and they printed it for me. They seem to deliberately forget to send it. They may claim 2 weeks to get it sent, which may be a lie. You may have problems with new insurer without it so keep ringing.
