First Time Firearm Applicant Lead Time

Has anyone recently been a first time applicant for their Licence ? or any real idea of what kind of lead times I am looking at?

I handed all my docs into the Garda Station yesterday and my paperwork is all in order from the FOs level as such but he said it could be 3 months for new applicants.

Certainly not a recent new applicant but mine regularly take 3 months, largely because the super/chief super in my district prefers to take the maximum allowable time(and longer :/).

Having said that some first time applicants take a few weeks to process.

Entirely depends on the district more than the first/subsequent applicant status, in my experience.

Thanks for that otmmyboy2. The Gard actually rang me last night to ask me a some questions and he said he is doing his part / admin etc. straight away to move it up the line and off his desk.

So hopefully this efficiency will continue within the station !

I found that most times my application sat in the Super's inbox for many weeks after the FO had blessed it. The Super probably has some time set aside every month or so for Firrarms applications. Probably different for every station.

Oh I've found the quickest parts of the process, in order, to be:

1(fastest) - The actual sending out of the cert after paying the monies,

2 - The FO processing the paperwork,

3(snail's pace) - The S/CS signoff.

I know from experience that my district CS is not a fan of firearms(which of course filters down to the Super under him), and would rather there be none. So he exercises everything he can, including, ironically, inactivity, to delay and complicate the process of both renewals and new licences. Subs aren't bad though, so there's that at least 😋
