I just got a form in the post for a tax return for 2020.

I have never got one of these before as my employer takes care of my PAYE and PRSI and all that.

I have no other source of income apart from this job.

Is this common or is it just some raving lunatic in the tax office having a brain fart?

Do I just ignore the form?

My parents received the same letter today. They are the same with just standard PAYE etc and no other income.

I was wondering the same thing. The form is very detailed but 95 per cent is not applicable.

Is it just a case of making sure the amount entered on the form amtches back to payslips?

I would be interested in knowing why some people get selected for this?

    Do NOT ignore it

Every year a certain proportion of PAYE taxpayers are selected to complete a return. Lucky you, it's your turn.

The return came with a letter. There are details on the letter. Read the letter. Understand what you have to do and the very real consequences for non compliance.

To think we have enough to deal with with the changes in property tax and Covid and all that, and these jokers sending out a ridiculous requirement like this.

I got one of these before, 20 years ago, and in those days you could phone them up and say, run it by my employer. End of.

Now days they will fine you and publish you name as a tax defaulter.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

I did mine today online. If you have no other income it’s pretty straight forward. You can use it to claim your medical expenses from last year if you have any.

I do a tax return every year, all my income is PAYE (most years).

I use it to claim tax relief on medical expenses.

I don't know of any other way to claim tax relief on medical expenses.

So I assume that all people claiming tax relief on medical expenses are doing a tax return.

Do these people have anything better to be doing during a Covid pandemic?

People are weary and don't need this speculative $hit in their lives.

They mentioned in the letter that they used selection criteria based on a range of indicators. Those with PAYE income over a certain threshold and/or who may have additional income to declare. LOL.

Apparently their records indicate that I meet one or more of these selection criteria.

I bet I won't be given the opportunity to ask them where did they get their information from.

My only income is my job.

    Wow.
