Overflow pipe leaking help

    Hi all

Total plumbing novice here. I have had an issue the last say 3 weeks where an en suite (Added in at a later date) toilet is leaking water from cistern into the bowl..I thought nothing of it really but during the night we can hear the water tank filling. I was advised to close the valve on the toilet to stop it until I sorted a plumber. I closed it this morning. Leak stopped..I assumed it was an issue with the toilet itself.

Roll on 12 hours and I noticed the outdoor overflow pipe was leaking all day. I was assured from someone it was a coincidence and just to keep an eye on it. As a test I decided to open the valve in the above toilet again just to see if overflow pipe stopped leaking. It did.

So Im at the stage in thinking if the issue is actually the water tank in the attic rather than the toilet and the toilet was leaking from the toilet cistern to relieve the water tank.

Am I way off here? Also until I sort a plumber over the next few days is this dangerous? Am I better off leaving the toilet leak or closing the valve and letting the overflow pipe do its job? The toilet is fine, it doesn't really bother me short term as the bowl doesn't overflow I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Any help is appreciated and tbh I'm not a DIY person I'm more techy so please you'll have to dumb this down for me 😅

    Thanks in advance
