Connecting TV to stereo

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, mods please feel free to move if not.....

I have a relatively new TV (LG webOS), maybe two years old, and a fairly elderly, but still working perfectly, mini hifi (Yamaha MCR-550).

I had my previous (non-smart Samsung) TV hooked up to the stereo, and the sound was fantastic.

I cannot for the life of me get the sound on this new one to go through the stereo, no matter what I do. All the cables were transferred from the old TV to the new one, all the connections look correct as far as I can tell, but no sound, no joy.

The sound on the TV at higher volumes is really poor, it just seems to top out at a fairly mid-level - so I'd love to get this sorted - can anyone advise me??? (I know that's not a lot of info to go on, but I'm so non-techy that I don't know what else I can add).

It has occurred to me to just get a sound bar for the TV, but I don't really want to spend a couple of hundred quid if I don't actually have to - and the stereo is sitting there, and worked perfectly in the past..... why won't it connect to this TV???

Have you set the sound output mode on the TV to output to an external sound system?

Next question would be what sort of cable are you using to connect the two?

Not familiar with your equipment but I had a similar issue where I wanted to run a Samsung smart TV through the old amplifier I use for my record player. The telly only has optical out and the amp only has aux in via RCA.

Brilliant piece of kit for €20.

Takes the digital output from the TV and gives you an analog input to the stereo. No latency issues. Added bonus that it gave me bluetooth functionality for the stereo too.

On the stereo I only have Aux ports

Is there a critical mismatch here? I've set the output to optical, but no sound.

I'm trying to load up pics of the back of the telly and stereo, but the pictures won't load for some reason.

Aha - digital output on the telly, analogue in on the stereo - that sounds like my problem right there. Who knew??? (not me!)

That gizmo that you got for 20 quid, sounds great - is there much to setting it up? (anything beyond plug it into an available port, and I'm struggling, as I'm sure is obvious from this thread!)

It's plug and play. You plug an optical cable from the telly into it and then an RCA cable from it into the stereo aux input. Turn it on and make sure you're stereo is set to the aux input. You might have to select optical out in the TV settings the first time you use it but in my experience after that the TV automatically switched to the digital output when I turned on the Prozor.

One thing to be aware of is that the Prozor unit defaults to Bluetooth when you switch it on, so if you have previously connected it to your phone for example it will try to connect to it when you turn it on. It does about 10 seconds of signal searching before it will switch over to the optical input from your TV. If it does connect to your phone then you just have to hit disconnect on your phone or switch off Bluetooth and the Prozor automatically switches back to the TV. Once you are connected to the TV it will not switch back to Bluetooth unless you select Bluetooth on the Prozor remote. It's no big deal, just something to be aware of.

You can buy the Prozor unit on Amazon etc. if you want to get it quicker, but it'll be slightly more expensive. I bought it on Ali Express and it took about 2 weeks to arrive.

Om my LG the optical oitput socket is also a 3.5mm headphone output. If yours only has optical you will need an optical to electrical dongle.

The red and white plugs at the bottom right are the audio cables ..... if not for connecting to external audio, what are they for?? I see the digital optical audio port elsewhere now.....

The red and white are RCA analog output, does your stereo have the same connection for input? If so, you don't need a converter.

That's the back of the stereo..... nothing changed there, when I changed the TV I just plugged the cables into the new one as per previous picture...

In that case you either have a bad cable or you need to select the audio output to external on the TV audio settings. I'm not familiar with LG TVs but it should be easy to find in the audio settings if it's there. You definitely don't need any more equipment, maybe just a new cable if nothing else works...

I'm stumped. That screen suggests that the audio output from RCA is active all the time and you should be getting a signal to your stereo. You definitely have Aux 1 selected as the source on your stereo?

And as i said, it worked perfectly with the other telly, which is why I was stumped that it didn't with this one.

The digital/analogue mismatch makes sense, as does the suggestion that maybe those are input ports on the TV..... but then you say it looks like it should be working??

I would be reasonably confident those are audio outputs, but without the exact model number of the TV I can't say for sure. And I suppose it would make sense that the "output" isn't working if it's an input! There is no digital/analogue mismatch in this scenario, you're using an analogue connection on the TV and an analogue connection on the stereo.

The unit I linked earlier will work for you, you just use the optical output on the telly and plug those RCA leads into the Prozor instead of the TV. But it seems like it shouldn't be necessary here.

What does this say? I think you might have an audio/video input, not a stereo audio output unfortunately.

OK, one more question, if I may....

Does that yoke come with the optical input cable? Obv I have the output cables to link to the stereo, but what links the telly to the converter?

And also, any idea if these are available in any bricks'n'mortar stores in Dublin? Would there be any hassle buying from Amazon.co.uk (customs, extra charges, etc)?

Yes it comes with an optical cable. Probably low quality but will do the job. Be careful with optical cables, you can't bend them too much or they will crack and break.

I don't think this particular unit is in any bricks and mortar shops, you will find DACs but they will be much more expensive. Amazon.co.uk could be problematic with customs, but as you've said in your other post you can avoid that by using Amazon.de

Amazon.de doesn't involve customs charges and you can set the language to english by changing the national flag tab. Quite a few sellers won't ship beyonf DE/AUT but if you keep looking you will probably find one that will.

Just to update this -

the gizmo arrived, very easy to set up, and I now have sound that I can blast through my stereo - hurray!!!

I haven't attempted the bluetooth capability yet, but will get to that over the weekend.

One last question/quibble - when I route the sound from the TV through the stereo, it's quite low, so I have to ramp the volume up a lot (I have it in the 40's, where on the tuner it would be on 15 typically, 20 max) - any idea if it's possible to balance this out a bit so that I don't shatter windows when I switch back to the tuner having forgotten to turn the volume down??

No, I hadn't thought of the volume on the Prozor, I'll check that (I didn't get a remote with mine, but I think I remember there being a volume button on the thing itself)

But something else funny tonight - I usually watch telly via the Sky box, and that all works perfectly - but tonight I fired up Netflix on the TV, and there's no volume at all.... I checked the sound out options on the TV, and they were still the same set to Optical - TV is connected via the Prozor to the stereo, so as far as I'm concerned should work as it has been, with sound to the stereo.

I've resorted to the TV speakers for now, and it's grand - but I'm puzzled as to why Netflix won't route sound through an external speaker??

I've no issue with Netflix audio on mine, but I have seen reports where this is a problem for people. Apparently one solution is to go into the audio settings on your TV, look for something like "digital audio output" and change that to "PCM".

I have no idea what any of that means or does but apparently it works.
