    Hi

i am in the market for a compact camera, at the higher end of the market. to cut a long story short, i put a deposit on my camera of choice 6 weeks ago with a high street shop. i was told this week that there's a distinct possibility of not getting the camera at all due to supply issues. i have contacted other high street shops and have been told the same thing, essentially the supply shortages will get worse before they get better seems to be the message.

Amazon does not have the camera in stock which leaves e Bay, i'm a bit weary of going that route, although i know some sellers are 100% legitimate. have you bought from e bay? or other online retailers?

What camera is it you're looking for?

Ebay, same as with Amazon (third party sellers) or any other online retailer, you need to research the merchant and the ad to ensure you don't get caught by any missleading info there, although with Amazon you do feel you have better buyer protection than with ebay.

Coincidentally I bought from ebay a high end scope earlier this year (same to you, supply issues, only stocked by this seller on ebay), and the experience was perfect (I did a lot of research before ordering). A friend of mine here in Dublin bought a 5dmkIII from a third pary seller on Amazon last year, he was sent a toy, and he had an awful experience to get refunded.

Be wary of the seller rating, how it was built up (selling similar or random stuff, how often, etc), google him, ask him one or two questions to test him (or read other exchanges he may have had with other buyers) and see if he is trying to rush the sale, see if the price looks too good to be true, and don't rush.

That should give you a good idea of the profile of the seller.
