Upgrade question

    Currently running an i7 6700K, Asus Z170-A, 32gb ram and a GTX 1070.

I am contemplating upgrading the CPU/motherboard/RAM with a view to a new GPU in the new year. I haven't been keeping track of stuff at all, so totally out of the loop on what is in vogue and what isn't now.

Gaming mainly but also some work / photo editing involved. Looking something that'll last at least 5 years.

Is an i9 the way to go here? Budget wise less than a grand.

You can reuse the RAM you have, unless you want to sell it & upgrade to 3600MHz+.

    10 cores: Intel Core i9-10850K, high-end CPU tower + Z590 motherboard for 680eur https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/Bd9dsX

    12 cores: AMD Ryzen 5900X, high-end CPU tower + B550 motherboard for 765eur https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/nxsQt8

Be aware that AMD just confirmed upgraded CPUs coming early 2022; and Intel is about to release a new architecture too.
