Pain?

I was visiting my parents at the weekend and when I tried to pick their terrier up he squealed like he was in pain, I've often picked him up before without any issues. He seems very bloated and he has a wart-like lump on his back. I think they might be overfeeding him as he growls for a treat after every walk, is it likely that the bloat is causing him pain?
