So I have a canon 5d 3 and I get this error with my 24-70 f2.8L mkII lens, It was working perfectly yesterday, and today this :

"Er 01 communication between camera and lens is faulty

    clean the lens contacts"

Also everything is dimmer when I use the viewfinder with this lens on it.

All other lenses work perfectly, so seems an issue with this particular lens.

I have tried cleaning the contacts, doesn't help, and they look fine...

is the aperture stuck? if you're saying the viewfinder is unusually dim, i'd suspect this has happened, whether it's a root cause or not.

I have been quoted €335 to get this fixed by a canon service centre here ... I have also emailed Conns cameras in Dublin for a quote - I'll be back home over Christmas, might go there to get it fixed.

Try Eoghan Murray in F/1.0 camera repair. Looking up on Facebook or online. He is really good.

+1 on Eoghan. He's a Canon specialist, and to be frank, undercharges. A gent to deal with.

Aperture lever on the lens is most likely bent and not meeting up with the in camera lever.

Have a look at it and see if it's straight and try bending it out a fraction if you're confident enough. It's reasonably sturdy.

+1 for Eoghan BTW. He doesn't generally do Nikon any more (they won't supply parts) but he did some work for me when he was starting out a few years ago and was a decent bloke who does top class work at a great price
