I suppose you are out of luck on this one. 520 paid PRSI contributions are needed. There is no way around it. In both of the current calculation systems. If you do not have those 520 contributions you cannot qualify for the contributory pension or a part of it.

Ok but what about the total contributions approach where there is an allowance for rearing children and so basically unable to take on a job?

What years were the child rearing duties. I.e, was it after 1994?

You also need 520 paid contributions first in the total contribution approach. It does not matter if you have reared children or did some caring. As long as you do not have the 520 paid contributions- which is a basic MUST requirement- you cannot use your up to 20 years of credits for times of unemployment, illness, rearing children or caring.

Try to clock up another 120 contributions before you reach pension age. All you would need is a part time job and an earning of 38 euros per week. Going by the minimum wage that would be 4 hours of work per week. That would be just one afternoon per week behind a counter in a newsagent or something.
