BMW 520D 2007 - couple of small issues

    Hi all.

    I have a 2007 auto BMW 520D.

There's a couple of small issues lately and they are more so annoying than anything major.

The first one is the heater blower. It works completely fine bar when you put the setting to blow hot air on you, if you do that the air blows fine but it blows cold. Not a biggy as the hot air comes out on the window and pretty much any other setting. Any thoughts on what this is? If it's an easy fix might get it sorted?

Second one is the back left door, when opening it with the central locking it makes a bit of a noise for a second or two after you hit the open button and the locks open. Like a slight grinding or weeing noise. The door opens, closes, locks, and unlocks fine though with the central locking button so it's not really an issue but the noise is only new and it's a bit annoying and also wondering if this means the actuator or the central locking on that door will stop working shortly. Again is this a simple fix?

The car is also booked in for NCT next week but doubt they will affect it. I got a full service over the summer and at the time the mechanic gave it a look over and said everything looks good. But that was in June so obviously a lot can change then.

    Thanks in advance.

Old car lock actuators needs bit greasing. It is worth to do before something breaks. Do not try to oil, it does not offer the long term solution and can damage the plastic gears.

The first issue with your air flow, I would think that the blend door actuator has failed and is stuck in a position that prevents flow of hot air out of the vent facing you. I am not too familiar with those actuators but as far as I know they can still allow cold air to exit the vent, but block hot air at the same time.

The second issue, that noise you hear is the window motor operating much slower than it usually would, which indicates it is on the way out. On most cars its a case of removing the door panel, disconnect all the connections behind the door, remove the weather proof seal and the window regulator and motor will be in your view. I think it is common to use rivets to hold to motor to the door frame, that may be the only tricky bit.

Neither of those things you've listed are checked during an NCT, so if your mechanic has checked it over i.e brakes, suspension, headlights, tyres. Then you should be okay for the next NCT.

Keep us updated, hope all works out for you

Thanks all for the recommendations. Door seems fine now. Just the blower not blowing hot air on a certain setting. Not a biggy so I might not bother getting that looked at for now.

1 small problem 1 small problem ➕ 1small problem equals big problem equals junk yard. Never ignore the small problems.
