Big weekend - the inaugural women's race today. Forecast is good for watching, though maybe not as much fun for actually racing over cobbles.

Looks like the race should reach Roubaix before the worst of the rain, especially with a strong Southerly breeze.

I'd like Vos to win but I think she's suffering from too many birthdays now and doesn't have quite the spark in comparison with the younger riders.

Very annoying that the race has started by there is no live TV coverage yet 😠

Deignan went on a very early attack and has a lead of 1'05" with 66 km to go.

That's a joke tbh. I've never been in favour of things like mandatory showing of women's sports but this is something anyone would want to watch. The most exciting parts are sometimes the first approaches to the cobbled sectors.

Deignan looks to be running at least a 28mm tyre there no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,527 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

They look pretty chunky alright. I wouldn't be surprised if they were 30 mm or 32 mm

Jaysus. Riders down all over the shop

Deignan has this race won as long she doesn't crash

Yeah looks like it. Riders going down like Skittles there

Jesus when they say 5* they mean it. Looks almost impossible to stay upright.

Only ambient sound for me on the GCN App on laptop (or Android), but the same picture coverage on ES ap has Marty McDonnell commentating. Anyone else getting commentary on GCN?

I'm really beginning to get p1ssed off with the flakiness of the GCN App - 25% of the time, it fails to work properly

I was getting only ambient sound on the stream with the live show, so I switched to the stream that doesn't have the live show and I have the commentary

I only use the Eurosport Player app on the phone but it often defaults to ambient and you can switch it to 'English' for the proper commentary. Not sure if it's the same problem.

Yeah I get that too. Usually happens if I unlock the phone or leave the room with it and come back in click the speech icon in the top right of the screen and change back to English

That was class. Brilliant to watch

    For 2022:

    Make the race longer.

Broadcast the entire race live on TV.

    Improve the prize money significantly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,025 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

I thought the length of the race was quite good. No waiting around riding 50km before the racing started. For the inaugural event, it deserved an "exploit" which Deignan delivered due to the shorter distance. If it was a 160km race, I don't think she would have gone for it like she did and we could have had a group together until 20km to go.

I agree on the other two suggestions.

Just watched it there on catch up. Amazing performance by Deignan! A brave and worthy champion. Was on the edge of my seat when AVB took a minute out of her on that one section. Brilliant advert for women’s racing.

    *Vos I mean

Annamiek van Vleuten broke her pelvis today and Vos seemed to be holding her hip after the podium ceremony.

On a positive note, Trek Segafredo have paid Deignan a bonus to bring her winnings up to the same level as the men's.

When people talk about 30mm tyres is that 700x30c ?

My bike has 700x23c so am I on 23mm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,577 ✭✭✭at1withmyself

Yep, the 23 represents the width

    The 700 represents the diameter

I haven't seen hands like that since I played in bands in my late teens, lad that played drums with us and gave it serious socks would have had similar on his hands after a gig.

EDIT: Actually bumped into him recently he is or was drumming for a living and his technique has improved judging from the youtube videos he's got up.
