Hi, wondering if anyone can help me here.

My GF recently booked an apartment in Dublin for the night through booking. On the morning they were due to stay there, the person who rents the place cancelled them. Anyway now she is trying to get a refund from booking who say they need a letter from the bank stating that they won’t refund the money or handle the dispute. She went to the bank and they said they don’t do that, so she went back to booking and they said they can’t solve this dispute without a letter from the bank.

has anyone any advice what we should do next, thanks

This is MADNESS. Is the account of the person (who rents the place) still up? Is there a possibility for you to report the listing?

No the account is gone. I believe she reported them to booking and they apologised and offered a different accommodation but she just asked for the money back.

Who did you pay the money to and was it direct transfer?

Your issue is with Booking.com, once and only once you made the transaction through Booking.com, if you made it through as mentioned direct transfer then the issue is between you and the person who cancelled as you have gone outside Booking.com.

Surely the simple solution is to do a chargeback. Put it in writing to your bank and tell them to chargeback.

You cannot chargeback if you made a direct bank transfer to a third party.

You can try the banks fraud department, they might try and help or refund in good faith.

If it was paid by card chargeback is of course doable.

There are a lot of scams on booking.com these days.

I agree, but any time I have used booking.com, it was paid in advance from my card. Most recently, the money was taken 7 days before arrival. I have only seen pay in advance or pay on arrival. Neither of these would fit into the reported situation.

This is why the poster needs to clarify if they made a bank transfer. Some adverts (mainly scams of course) request this.

Your experience isn't representative of everything on booking.com so it doesn't help to tell the op to do something that might not be possible (sounds like I'm giving you a hard time here, I'm not - just that there are other option available!)

    OP

How did you pay for this and when?
