Flappy paddles on steering column

For years I drove an automatic with flappy paddles. The paddles were on the steering wheel. I presumed that's the way it was on all cars.

I see the new Peugeot's have the paddles on the steering column. That seems strange. Would it not mean that they could only be used when traveling in a straight line?
