Upload speed often higher than download speed

    I have a Rural WiFi 4G router.

I sometimes get very high speeds - that let me stream 4K - and sometimes it only 7 to 13Mbps.

my upload speed can also be quite high. At the moment it is 15.8Mbps and my download speed is 11.51.

when I lived in a city house with EiR the upload speed was never that high. Isn’t it unusual for the upload speed to be higher than download speed?

    Usually because of contention.

So the download is used by more people so less of it to go around, where as the upload would not have as much demand

Do you mean the mast is is being used by other routers?

Can be that mast has lots of users on it, can also be further up the chain where a number of masts are connected and over subscribed.

to avoid contention usually best to do speed test outside of of day 8am to 11pm so middle of night or very early morning when not many would be using it

Not just other routers but mobile phones too. Rural WIFI only “virtual” provider which using Three network if I am not mistaken.

I will do that test. It never occurred to me before.

There was times that the speed exceed 15Mbps - I’m pretty sure that was morning or early afternoon but can’t be sure.

The Upload speed seems to have got higher over the last week or so.

They use several providers. The router came with a Three SIM but the signal and speed was fire and kept disconnecting.

They sent me an Eir SIM which the same.

Then they sent a Vodafone SIM which is connecting to the Vodafone network and the speed was 7 to 10 Mbps at first and occasionally faster.

I ran that speed test around 1am this morning. It went over 25 Mbps. Upload speed was 15 I think

I did another test just now and got 19.23Mbps. Upload speed is also 15

I did these tests on AppleTV with an app called Internet Speed Test Fiber Test by RedMango

Near the bottom of the screen it shows -

    You can stream

    SD HD 4K

there is a red dot beside each and they turn green as I do the test however the 4K never goes green even when the speed exceeded 25Mbps - it turns yellow.

    what could this mean?

I did another speed test as I typed this and hit 23Mbps

I tried Far From Home on Netflix as it was the first 4K movie that I found.

I have never seen 4K is action before but I doubt this is what I got.

In fact some of the FX scenes are quite poor

Ya you would need 25MB download speed consistently to get 4K streaming, but you should be able to stream HD easily if your getting 15.

so yes of speed is good/better in off peak times it’s contention, and not much you can do other than changing provider which you did when changing SIM cards

The dot beside the 4K went green during one test early yesterday morning.

I would like to experience 4K but I am happy with HD.

Consumer internet usage is asymmetrical in nature. We consume data at a much, much higher rate than we upload it, so if you’ve a large number of users on the network, you’ll see it on the download side, with much lighter traffic on the uploads.
