Flu Vaccine Time 2021

My pharmacy just phoned me to offer me a vaccine appointment next week. Had half forgotten it was that time of year, with Covid dominating the vaccine scene. Apparently there’s a good supply of influenza jabs this year, so time to make your enquiries if not already contacted, and if you normally get the vaccine.

It doesn’t invariably stop you catching a brief dose of sharp influenza-like illness, but in my experience it cuts it down to a 36 hour illness without the drawn-out recovery time. Well worth it, have not had a real influenza since 1980s, and it has been a memorable dose the handful of times I’ve got it in my decades.

Got my flu vaccine this morning, recommend anyone to do likewise. Just might save a cr@p 2 weeks out of your life and work-time lost.

No side effects whatsoever from my flu vaccine… unlike my second AZ dose!

My immune system is well habituated to the flu vaccine and doesn’t see the need to over-react.

I’m a private patient, have got flu vaccine yearly with chemist because of past medical history. They phoned me this year to offer me early vaccine and told me there’s no shortage this year. I was given it free of charge because some years back my GP had sent the requisite form to say an annual vaccine is appropriate for me. You can approach a pharmacy, they would then check up with your GP (the first year they do it) to go ahead on the basis of need/desirability so you’d qualify for no cost vaccine, otherwise there’s a basic cost.

Ask around at a couple of chemists, try some chains online.

They are talking about Flu vaccine on News@1 with Bryan Dobson. This year’s vaccine is extra powerful, has an adjuvant stimulus. The doctor speaking said they believe the season could be very bad this year with so few, unvaccinated, being exposed to it in last year or two.

Got my flu jab yesterday. No side affects at all. I get the flu vaccine every year since I had a couple of bad flus which took me weeks to get over and having had vulnerable relatives. My local chemist is McCabes and they have an online appointments portal. Made the appointment on Saturday and was jabbed by 12 yesterday, and back at my desk by 12.30!

Many didn’t

I got on yesterday, and it's mostly because I'm in contact with vulnerable relatives from time to time. Also I got a nasty dose of the flu a few years ago and wouldn't be keen to experience it again, so if the vaccine reduces the chances of that happening, yay!

A small proportion don’t survive, many suffer extra weeks of misery without it.

Tbh I never had any flue vaccine. What group can I fit myself in? Can't remember I ever had weeks of misery.

It seems not to be available for those under 65. As a primary school teacher, I’ve had flu a few times, pleurisy x 4 and pneumonia. I dread flu season. I think I may have to ring my GP.

This year there is plentiful supply, so once the over 65s and others more vulnerable have been vaccinated you should be able to get it no problem from chemist or GP… probably end of this month.

I got my flu vaccine with McCabes chemist and they were taking booking for 18 - 64 year olds as well as 65+ I'm 53 and got it no problem.

The more of us have the vaccine the (somewhat) less it likely spreads around.

My own experiences of influenza have been, in general, many years apart. Yeah, plenty of other respiratory stuff, even bacterial pneumonia landing me in hospital etc. But the episodes of influenza have been memorable for their sudden onset in that I can remember what I was doing each time when struck down.

Past 20 years I’ve got vaccinated annually and haven’t got an extended full blown flu. Last time I probably got it was several years back whilst travelling home from Nepal, when I had got vaccinated late in the season, and where influenza was rampant around Doha where I was stopped and where I sat near a man who looked extremely unwell and was coughing. 36 hours later I got an abrupt severe fever and cough which sent me to bed with memories of past influenza. Thought I was in for it, but 36 hours later I had recovered pretty well completely. It was fairly likely the vaccine had provided enough protection for me to fight off what could have been a much more prolonged nasty infection.
