Usefulness of adult autism diagnosis

The main thing I can imagine using it for is work. Would an official diagnosis help with getting accomodations at work? Do employers often ask for proof of autism or medical issues? I don't have much experience with asking for accommodations and I'd appreciate it if anyone wanted to share their experiences.
