P21 balancing statement

    Hi all,

Worked in a temporary job for a few days of a contract at the beginning of this year. I was charged emergency tax in this employment, which at present has not been refunded to me.

Would I be correct in saying I need to complete a P21 balancing statement in order to recieve a tax refund in respect of same?

If so, how do I go about this? When should I do this?

    Thanks.

If you have/get another job before the end of the year you could try asking Revenue to put you on cumulative basis (assuming you aren't) and it should fix itself up if you earn enough to cancel it out.

If no job before year end you may have to do a tax return in the new year for 2021 (you can usually get a prelim statement of liability in mid Jan). Once you can see that on your myAccount you can submit a return confirming the basics and get anything owed back.

The P21 balancing statement is the equivalent but doesn't exist anymore.

The job in which I am seeking the refund was for a few days work in April 2021. I was also working in a C.E. scheme the other days in the week during this. I am still working on this scheme at present.

In this case what steps do I need to take to get my emergency tax back from the temporary employment above?

Assuming CE is paid via welfare? and you get no job before end of year, wait til Jan 2022 and then login to your myAccount (if you don't have one register on Revenue before then), and go to Review your tax for 2021.

There will be an option to Request or View Prelim Statement of Liability, and underneath that an option to Complete an Income Tax Return. You will have to tick through and confirm details of all income and credits across a couple of screens. At the end if you are owed money once you submit it comes straight into the bank account you have registered (should not take long to get a refund unless you get selected for a review or something).

Not sure what exact date it will be available in Jan.

    Thank you.

Yes the Community Employment (C.E. scheme) is paid through Social Welfare recieving €225.50 per week.

As well as the C.E. at present, I work a temp job also. ( which is permitted in the terms and conditions of the scheme.)

Should I do the above steps now as described or wait till Jan. 2022 to do so?

If you are on the payroll on the temp job you maybe be able to get it fixed up now by contacting revenue. I always prefer getting things sorted as soon as myself (for better or worse), but given your split sources of income, it is possible Revenue have and will keep you on Week 1 basis, rather than cumulative. Up to you if you try now to contact them to switch to cumulative basis.
