Houses in Dublin 12 - Soundproofing

I'm considering getting some soundproofing done in my 1940s house in Dublin 12. There is a really surprising level of noise that passes through. My neighbours are lovely quiet people, but I'd like to be able to occasionally have people over and have a late one without worrying and feeling inconsiderate.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows if the houses around here share joists with the house next door as I think that might be why the noise is travelling so much. Or if anyone has had any experience sound proofing successfully?

    Thanks!
