Seperated and buying a property on my own?

If someone is seperated (ie, a man), can they buy a property on their own without the person they are technically and legally married to (ie their wife)?

Is there anything to stop them applying for a mortgage on their own? I was told No.

Are you legally separated? The issue if you're not is that your wife could try to make a claim for part of that property in a divorce. I think the banks would also want confirmation of legal separation before approving a mortgage.

All you need is to formalise your separation via "deed of separation" and get it witnessed. This will include details of how joint assets are divided and refer to having no claim over future properties. The banks will accept this as proof enough.
