    Who are the NCBI?

NCBI is Ireland’s national sight loss agency, we are a non-profit organisation which provides free support and services nationwide to people experiencing sight loss. NCBI’s vision is for people who are blind and vision-impaired to have the same opportunities, rights, and choices as others to fully participate in society.

    What is myNCBI SmartHub?

The myNCBI SmartHub is an Alexa Skill and Google Action facilitates direct communications with NCBI, bringing NCBI services and content into the homes of our vision impaired Service Users. We believe that technology is the single biggest enabler of people with sight loss, removing barriers to employment, education, and enabling those with sight loss to live full and equal lives. We decided to develop this smart speaker application to make our services as accessible as possible. While smartphones are widespread, their cost can make them inaccessible to our service users, whereas a smart speaker, such as an Alexa or Nest, is available at a fraction of the price, and their voice navigation makes them perfect for people with low or no vision.

What features will be available on myNCBI SmartHub?

Over the coming months NCBI will be enabling the following list of features on the myNCBI SmartHub:

    ·      Content describing the various services and forms of assistance offered by NCBI

    ·      Information on sight loss, various treatments, and symptoms

    ·      The ability to make an appointment with NCBI

    ·      The ability to request a referral to NCBI

    ·      The ability to volunteer or become an advocate for NCBI

    ·      The ability to register for live events

    ·      Listen to podcasts, newsletters, and other forms of media content for the visually impaired

    Taking Part

The myNCBI SmartHub project team are looking for assistance in testing our new Alexa Skill and Google Action. This will involve trying features as they are developed, providing feedback on the user experience, the ease of use of the skill/action, the quality of content, and any potential bugs or issues encountered. This will help us to improve the user experience of the myNCBI SmartHub for our service users and have the maximum positive impact for the sight loss community.

To take part, please fill out the survey below. It consists of some basic questions on the smart speaker and broadband you have:

In the coming weeks, the project -team will reach out to you to discuss the next steps.

    Who can take part

We want to make the SmartHub as beneficial as possible to our service users and the sight loss community. This testing is open to all NCBI services users, their families, friends, teachers, carers, healthcare providers, and anyone in the broader sight loss community.
