Clutch gone on 2019 Mazda CX-5

I had an awful situation on Saturday. For some reason I shifted the gear and it went to the wrong gear. I heard an load noise from the gear stick and tried to change back to the right gear. The gear stick went suddenly all wobbly. I stopped the car and when I started again, I could not change the gears, it would not let me reverse and I could not use the clutch. A sure sign the clutch was knackered especially from the smell of smoke. Luckily the car was near my house and I could get it home but it almost caused a crash in the process.

In my previous car which is a Volvo S40 which I had for 8 years, I never had a problem shifting gears. My original idea was to get the local mechanic to check it but my wife said that it should be under warranty. I checked and Mazda have a 3 year or under 100,000km warranty policy. My car is just over 20,000km and I have it less then 2 1/2 years! Has anybody had any experience on this? Should I just go Mazda and advise them of the circumstances? Thanks for any advise.

You just admitted to putting the car into the wrong gear - causing the problem.

Maybe try a different approach when you go to mazda wanting a freebie or warranty work

But surely in a relatively new car, if you put a car into a wrong gear by mistake, you should have no problem getting it back to the right gear without doing any damage? This is the first time that I have had this problem.

No you shouldn’t, at worst the car would conk out…go back on warranty.

Never had a problem when doing this myself.Whether changing up or down.1st to 4th or 5th to 1st whatever.

Sounds like more than a clutch problem.

What gear was the wrong gear?

I wonder was the wrong gear selection the result of a mechanical failure or was the mechanical failure caused by the wrong gear selection? If you were, for example, labouring in 5th and changed to 2nd instead of 4th, that would do no good. But if something had already gone wrong and caused 4th not to be able to be selected, that's different. In either case until a mechanic looks at it, it's hard to know.

Wrong! I spoke to the dealership and the car is under warranty and therefore it is not my error. It is a mechanical failure. Myself get your facts straight before you write.

A clutch going on a two and a half year old car after being accidentally put in the wrong gear? There's more wrong with that car than his simple mistake should have caused.

    That's a ridiculous statement.

It's a sure sign the gearbox is completely wrecked; as in now full of broken metal bits. Doesn't sound like a clutch problem at all.

5th gear but I wanted to be in 3rd gear. There was a load noise as I was going too slow. I looked to move it back to 3rd gear but could not. The gear stick went wobbly.

I have been sent a replacement car as they need to get in the parts to replace the damaged one. It does make me nervous getting back in and driving the car. Thankfully, I was not on the motorway or somewhere like that as there would have been an accident.

I do not know how going into 5th gear instead of 3rd could wreck the gearbox. I have seen guys who make massive power wreck gearboxs by going 1-2-1 instead of 1-2-3. But as I said they are making far more power than the car was designed for.

Back to yours, maybe the linkages broke. But gearbox may be gone rather than clutch.
